Flint Youth Theatre’s staged reading of Yankee Tavern will be performed Sunday, October 16 at 6:00 P.M. Written by Steven Dietz, the play draws the audience in with fast-paced dialogue, intriguing characters and a gripping story about conspiracy theories surrounding the 2001 terrorist attacks. Yankee Tavern is the first staged reading in FYT’s 2011-12 Off the Press Series. This play will be performed at Flint Youth Theatre, 1220 East Kearsley Street. The $7.00 admission includes the staged reading, a talk-back with the performers and refreshments provided by Fandangles’. Tickets are available at FYT by calling 810.237.1530 or at the door beginning one hour before the performance. More information is available at FlintYouthTheatre.org.
In a decaying bar on the ground floor of the abandoned Yankee Hotel, a young couple and a devoted conspiracy theorist debate the truth behind 9/11. But what starts as just talk becomes dangerously real when a mysterious stranger arrives with information that will drag them down a rabbit hole of terrifying possibilities. This acclaimed dramatic thriller is a fierce, funny and ultimately mind-bending work of theatrical power
Broadwayworld.com says, “The perfect onstage mystery for the times in which we live” and The Palm Beach Arts Paper adds “Dietz is a master of smart dialogue and wily storytelling.”
Commenting on the play, Walter Hill, FYT Associate Artistic Director, said, “Conspiracy theories are seductive. Psychiatrists say they help us make sense of otherwise incomprehensible events. JFK’s assassination, Area 51, Princess Diana’s car accident and the moon landing ‘hoax’ are all on the list—and now, so is 9/11. Yankee Tavern is set in 2006, five years after that terrible day and a time when about one-third of Americans surveyed believed what we saw and were told isn’t the whole story. The play isn’t really about what did or didn’t happen, but rather about its characters grappling with the agony of uncertainly about 9/11 and in their own lives.”
The Off the Press Series includes some of the latest plays from Broadway, Off-Broadway and the American Regional Theatre. Readings in the series are recommended for adults and older teens.
The Off the Press Series is sponsored by Fandangles’.
